Please find attached an hour long radio program that talks about abuse against women. This is from a new radio station Radioo Gamkaland in Beaufort West, Western Cape. We have been funded by the Department of Social Development for an HIV and AIDS program and that includes broadcasting 8 monthly radio programs. The aim of this theme was to link abuse against women to HIV. It is in Afrikaans as that is the dominant language in that area and the radio station went on air for the first time in a couple of months ago and we think the theme is relevant for the 16 days of activism againts women and children's abuse.

Title of the program: Sarsafai ra Khanepaani ko Bahas
Discussion of Water and Sanitation
Name of organisation: Radio Sagarmatha FM 102.4 MHz
Type of program: Interview
Length: 25 minutes 25 seconds
Language of the program: Nepali
The program was broadcasted on: 25th November 2009
Summary: Various governmental and non-governmental organizations working in the field of Water and Sanitation bring forth programs to be implemented in the local and the national level. But there are complains that the programs are very rarely gender-friendly. The experts opined that the programs on Water and Sanitation (WATSAN) should be planned accordingly. In the context of the 16 days movement of violence against women, we have incorporated two interviews in the program;
1. Interview with Mr. Krishna Rana, Program Manager, Community based WATSAN program under the Department of Water and Sewage Management.
- Nepalese society is such that men have always been the decision maker in the family and community. So, the women participation has always been a major problem in any program. But, the government policy about water management formulated in the year 1996 has mentioned few things about women participation.
The department has now brought forth programs with the help of ADB in the Western, Mid Western and Far Western regions of Nepal. And for the assurance of the women participation in the WATSAN programs, two women members out of 9 are made compulsory it the consumer's committee. This makes 22% of the total count. In these 3 regions, there are 676 consumers' committees in 21 districts. And the women participation in this committee has proved very fruitful as in most of the cases it is seen that the inactive committees have been brought to life by its women members. And government has taken the examples of these 3 regions, and has now planned of implementing WATSAN programs in other regions in similar manner.
2. Interview with Mr. Bhupendra Aryal, Program Development Officer, Rural WATSAN development fund committee.
- Most of the women in Nepal are responsible for the household activities; from cleaning to washing and from cooking food to fetching water. Because of the infrastructures and the geographical condition of Nepal, a person has to walk for hours to fetch a pot of water. This sad state prevails in almost all over rural Nepal. But, in recent programs launched for the rural, women participation has been made compulsory. They are invited in every consumer committee and their consent is made compulsory in any decisions. And the age old tradition of having women participation in any meeting, just in the name of their presence has ended. This has resulted in gender friendly programs in the community. The queuing up for ages for a pot of water has ended as there are many taps and other sources created near the community as per the necessity shown by the women. This has saved time for the productive activities which has even contributed in raising the living standards.
