CAMPAIGN LAUNCH - AMARC members stand togeather for the safety of journalists

We invite you to listen to many radio programmes produced by our members joint in the fight against impunity. Today the World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters (AMARC) launches an international broadcast campaign of radio programmes highlighting the work of journalists / producers of community radio to coincide with the World Day against Impunity for Crimes against Journalists.

Since 2006, UNESCO has condemned the killing of more than 800 journalists. Less than 7% of these crimes have been solved.

In 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. wrote: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever effects one directly affects all indirectly.”

Impunity is a crime against the exercise of freedom of expression and, more broadly, human rights. It emboldens the perpetrators of crimes, it threatens the rule of law, and it leads to fear and self-censorship. All society suffers.

With this campaign, AMARC wants to alert a broad international audience on the importance of ending impunity and ensure the safety of journalists. This initiative is about empowering local and community media to speak up and share their views, and fight against inpunity by producing radio programmes about stopping impunity while educating the public about the importance of their role in preserving a safe working environment for journalists.

Up to the end of 2016 you can follow interesting radio programmes, talks, inteviews provided by AMARC member radio stations on this site. The campaign materials can be reused for (a) rebroadcasting as it is, (b) using as reference to create new content that is locally relevant, and (c) translating and redistributing among local community radios.
